It was chilly in the morning, the big and bright green grass was withering, we felt the changing of the seasons.

This month was. . . Harvest festival! We harvested sweet potatoes and we had a baked sweet potato party at our farm!

First we went to the bamboo thicket and cut bamboo. Then we carried them to our farm and cut the bamboo into shorter pieces and split them. The kids loved chopping bamboo. They lined up and tried it again and again.

Next we harvested the sweet potatoes. The kids started to harvest them with farm  teacher Joe. The kids were so excited when they saw a part of the sweet potatoes. And when we pulled out the first sweet potato we broke into loud cheers. We harvested many sweet potatoes.

The kids chose the fire making team or the sweet potato washing team. The sweet potato washing team went to the river next to our farm and washed them.

The boys found a crab and were going to take it home but then they said “We will take it back to the river” and went back to the river again.

When we came back to our farm the fire was ready. The girl from Toyota made the fire today. When we added more bamboo to the fire, the fire teacher asked the kids ” Green bamboo or brown bamboo which is better for making fire? ” A boy answered “Brown one! Because green one still has a lot of water!” The teacher was surprised it “Exactly!!”

The kids picked up brown ones and added them into the fire and then they put sweet potatoes  into the fire too.

Mrs.Ann taught the kids safety rules for making fire. “It is dangerous to be close to the fire. Do you know how close is hot and how close is safe? Let’s make sure how far is safe!”

It was music tine while waiting for baking sweet potatoes! We played music with djembe, some other African music instrument, and music instrument kids brought by themselves. Some kids danced around the potatoes which we will harvest next month to wish for them to be more delicious.

Finally the baking sweet potatoes were cooked!  “Hot!” “Sweet!” “Tasty!” They were great. Our leader Maika read a picture book about baking sweet potatoes and the kids loved it.

We picked up some  lettuce which we planted last month and some  carrots too.

After we picked up the carrots, a boy asked Mr.Joe ” When we picked up the sweet potatoes we used a shovel but when we picked up the carrots we didn’t use it. We just picked up the carrots by hand. Why?”

Mr.Joe said ” Good question!” then he answered ” If you just pick up sweet potatoes without shovel, the sweet potato stalks break because they are thin. But a carrot stalk sticks with the carrot so you can just pick  it up.”

The adults didn’t notice about it. The kids always surprise us. We learn many things from kids.
